Great characterization requires an understanding of one’s internal sense of identity. Equally important, the impact of privilege and forms of bias must be taken into consideration when plotting. It doesn’t matter if your characters are completely new fantasy races, new races are compelling when you build realistic social advantages and bias against your character.
